Wine information: Chateau de Pez was Created in the 15th century and is the oldest domaine in Saint Estèphe. The Pontac family, who also created Haut-Brion, gave Pez its vineyards. The domaine was sold as a property of the state after the French Revolution and owned by a succession of families before it was purchased by Champagne Louis Roederer in 1995. When Louis Roederer bought it in 1995 they immediately set about improving the vineyards and cellars. 1996 was the first vintage fully made under the new ownership, and quality has been improving ever since. Located west of the town of Saint-Estèphe, Château de Pez consists of 74 continuous acres, with 59 acres planted to prime grape varieties, mainly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are planted with 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot.

Reviews: "Offers sleek raspberry and red currant fruit, supported by smoked apple wood and dark tobacco notes that are backed by a long, taut, chalky spine on the finish. In the austere camp, but with a solid core." 89 Points, Wine Spectator - James Molesworth - March 31, 2012

"With layers of wood, this is a structured wine, driven as much by tannins as fruit. It will need time for the dark plum fruit flavors to come through—St.-Estèphe is always likely to be firmly textured." 93 Points, Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss - February 2012

"The Chateau de Pez has a very tight bouquet with blackberry, cassis and a touch of crushed stone... The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, racy acidity, red rather than black fruits (wild strawberry and a touch of raspberry.) Nicely focused towards the finish, perhaps more like Montrose in style in terms of its clarity and poise. This is very fine." 91 Points, Wine Journal - Neal Martin - December 19, 2011
