Errazuriz KAI Carmenère

Wine information: Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the Aconcagua Valley - 100km North of the capital. Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano's descendant Eduardo Chadwick. Eduardo is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business. Errazuriz's philosophy is best expressed by Don Maximiano who said, "From the best land, the best wine." The grapes for Errazuriz's KAI 2007 are sourced from the finest lots of Carmenère from the Dom Maximiano Estate in the Valle de Aconcagua, a region that features an extended dry season with moderately warm summer days cooled by the soft afternoon breezes that blow in from the Pacific Ocean. This is actually a blend of 86% Carmenère, 7% Petit Verdot and 7% Syrah. The wine was then racked directly to 100% French oak barrels, 95% of which were new, and aged for 18 months.

Tasting Notes: Errazuriz KAI Carmenère is a deep, intense purplish-red colour, with ripe black fruit complemented by subtle notes of chocolate, tobacco, and sweet spices on the nose. The palate is very soft due to the ripeness of the firm tannins and an acidity that bodes well for excellent longevity. Today this youthful wine is voluptuous and very expressive, particularly of blackberries, roasted red bell pepper, fresh ground white pepper, truffle, and sweet spice. The finish is long, velvety, and very elegant.

Reviews: "Opaque ruby. Pungent, slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, cherry-vanilla, herbs and pepper. Dense, sweet and intense, with gentle grip and underlying structure to the oak-spiced cherry, dark berry and floral flavors. Full but in no way heavy. Really saturates the palate, finishing long and sweet, with fine-grained tannins and a lingering perfume of smoky herbs and cherry skin.
