Notes - A renaissance castello situated between Florence and Siena and a family that have owned it since 1141 don’t seem likely ingredients for one of Italy’s most dynamic and quality minded wineries, however in the space of the last 10 years Barone Francesco Ricasoli - the 32nd Baron - has turned the Castello di Brolio into one of Italy’s most respected wineries. The Barone has been one of the pioneers of the 'Chateau' concept in Tuscany, a concept by which the estate focus is purely on the production of the estates top wine - i.e. Castello di Brolio Chianti Classico - and any parcels or barrels that do not make the cut are 'downgraded' into the second wine and so on. This Chianti Classico is the estate's prime wine, embodying the refined elegance characteristic of the Brolio tradition. Castello di Brolio was first produced from the outstanding vintage of 1997. It is more than a traditional Riserva. Borrowing a French classification, it could be considered a "grand vin." Made from a selection of the best Sangiovese grapes and aged in barrique for about 18 months, the vintage is laid down in bottle for further ageing during which its nobility and elegance are enhanced. A concentrated red/purple colour, this delicious wine shows a herby, compplex nose with tar and leather notes. The palate is firm and tannic, with lots of structure and dense red berry fruit. There's a lovely savoury character and the finish is bone dry.
