Wine information:
The term Chartreuse refers to a fortress located in Château Coutet’s most southern plots. The building dates back to the 11th Century. According to local stories, it was named after the “Chartreux” priests, who lived in this fortress. The Château’s second wine, La Chartreuse de Coutet, is vinted from vines with an average age of 15 years. The result is a young, beautiful wine full of vivacity and freshness. Just like all of the property’s wines (Château Coutet’s 1er Cru Classé and La Cuvée Madame), the manual harvest consists of picking individual berries. A succession of passages allows the fruit to be picked at the optimal moment of maturity and concentration. The grapes are pressed three times consecutively and the juice is left to rest for one night. Then the juice is placed in new French oak barrels where the alcoholic fermentation takes place during an 18 month aging process.
This is a blend of 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon and 2% Muscadelle. The Chartreuse de Coutet has a lovely, brilliant golden color. Its subtle nose is characterized by hints of honey, almond, citrus, exotic fruits, as well as very ripe, soft apricot, with some floral notes of acacia. On the palate, the wine is honeyed, round and suave. Its wonderful concentration and a broad palette of aromas express the richness of the fruit flavors with orange zest, honey, honeysuckle, ripe fruits and citrus, complemented by toasty notes and some minerality. Full of finesse and elegance, the long finish is very expressive.
