Jacob's Creek St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine information: St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is now available in the UK again after a gap of about 5 or 6 years. It is named after the grandson, Hugo, of Bavarian immigrant Johann Gramp who planted his first grape vines on the banks of the then recently named Jacob's Creek. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for St Hugo are all sourced from the various vineyards in the Coonawarra valley, all of them grown on the famed Terra Rossa oils. Coonawarra is considered by many to be Australia’s best Cabernet Sauvignon district. Each vineyard parcel is harvested and vinified separately, the resulting wines are then aged for 18 to 20 months on new and one year old French Oak barrels and these are subsequently blended to create the St Hugo.

Tasting Notes: St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is a full and deep red colour with crimson highlights. The nose has typical Coonawarra Cabernet charactistics and there are aromas of lifted cassis and concentrated blackcurrant notes, a touch of dark chocolate and subtle cedar oak notes. These aromas follow on to the full and rich palate where there are cassis and blackcurrant flavours, mint flavours and fine grained tannins. This full, rich palate is well-blanced with fresh acidity and spicy notes from the French oak. Very nice for drinking now but will also age gracefully over the next 5 to 10 years.

Food & drink match: Recommended with pan-cooked eye fillet of beef, served with beef jus and Boulangere potatoes. The simplicity of the beef with the crispy dish of thinly sliced baked potatoes showcases the ripe intensity of this wine.
