Product information: Quinta do Vallado Touriga Nacional is red wine made in the Douro. Quinta do Vallado is located in the heart of the Douro, a few miles from Regua and the vineyards spread along both banks of the the Corgo Riva where it meets the Douro. The Quinta belonged to the legendary D. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira has been in the Ferreira family since 1818 (there are references dating back to 1716) and is now in its sixth generation. After restructuring of the vineyards completed in 1998, the now cover some 64 hectares, with the youngest vines aged between 6 and 10 years old covering 26 hectares whilst the oldest (and best) vineyards, covering some 38 hectares, are over 60 years old. A new winery was also built and completed in 1997. The estate is run by Guilherme Álvares Ribeiro ably assisted by his cousin, winemaker Francisco Olazabal (son of Francisco Olazabal, owner of Quinta do Vale Meão), nephew Francisco Ferreira (estate manager) and Christiano van Zeller, Douro legend, who assists with the commercial side of things. Unusually, for a Douro wine estate, Vallado has concentrated more on table wines than Ports. However, they also produce a very good 10 year old Tawny Port and have just released their very first Vintage Port with the 2009 vintage. This 100% Touriga Nacional is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel vats with daily manual remontage. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in the stainless steel vats and is then racked off into 225 litre French oak barriques (50% new, the rest one and two year old barriques) where it is then aged for a further 16 months. Great Portuguese wine.
