Niepoort Vintage Port 2000

Wine information: Niepoort is a family company now in its fifth generation and presently managed by Dirk Niepoort. Despite being the second smallest shippers in the trade they are second to none in quality. Already famous for their classic tawny ports, they have now joined the ranks of the great producers of Vintage Port. "Niepoort is to Vintage Port what Krug is to Champagne. They are both small houses in a world dominated by large competitors but they are producing outstanding wines which very few can match." (James Suckling, Vintage Port). Another classic Niepoort vintage: combining balance with superb concentration, and at the same time very fine and delicate. The wine also has a splendid rustic character giving it a wonderful individuality. Dark red in colour, with intense aromas of dark fruits along with a light herbaceous character. On the palate massively concentrated, dense but fresh, with solid tannins, finishing long and persistent. Great to taste now, and will develop wonderfully over the next decades. To fully benefit from its qualities we recommend it be decanted before serving. Serve with soft cheeses or blue cheese.

By far the biggest most unctuous young Niepoort I've ever tried, and I have long been a fan of this Shipper. A somewhat unyielding nose of violets and grapey aromas, although the brooding dark berry fruit is ultra-rich, viscous and refined for a youngster.
