Wine information:
CUNE (CVNE), or to give it its full name, Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España (The Northern Spanish Wine Company) was established on the 24th of March 1879 in Haro, Rioja. Set up by two brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa. CUNE is based in the traditional neighbourhood of the station, in the heart of the Rioja wine region. Historically, some of the oldest wineries of Rioja Alta established themselves here in order to benefit from the ease of transport via rail to the port of Bilbao, the most efficient form of transport in those days. CUNE Monopole is the oldest white wine brand in Spain, however the barrel fermented version is a rather new innovation. The name comes from the founding brothers enthusiasm for wines from Burgundy. It is made from 100% Viura and is barrel fermented, on its lees, in new American oak casks and is then left to there to age for a further 4 months prior to some bottle ageing at the bodega. There are rich, nutty, smoky oak and vanilla flavours and aromas. It is a marvellously rich and creamy, soft-fruit style white Rioja that is full of elegance and charm.
