Notes - The Rogue has always featured a varietal and stylistic twist, thanks to the inclusion of other varieties. The 2002 (Nepenthe's third) Rogue is again based on Cabernet, with Merlot and Shiraz to soften, lift and round out the wine.
Merlot (blended in at a significant 30%) contributes the plum-like fruit, lower acidity and tannin that the variety is famous for, adding flesh and softness to the rather serious, dark, Cabernet. Shiraz (10%) offers spice and fragrance, and a greater degree of richness and approachability. The final wine has beautiful youthful purple-red hues, and a nose that oozes spice, cassis, and rosemary. The palate echoes the nose, and features hints of plum and pepper supporting the liquorice, mint and herbs that are a hallmark of cool-climate Cabernet. Aged in predominantly French oak barriques to ensure softness and balance without overt woody characters, it is approachable at this early stage, but will develop complexity with age. Try with char-grilled beef fillet, Leg of Lamb, Venison.
