Wine information:
Cooley Distillery is the only independently Irish-owned whiskey distillery in Ireland. It was founded in 1987 when John Teeling bought the former state-owned alcohol plant on the Cooley Peninsula and converted it into two distilleries—a pot still and a patent still operation. The company takes its name from the location of the distillery at the foothills of the Cooley Mountains in County Louth. Acquisitions included the assets of the old A.A. Watt Distillery in Co. Derry (established in 1762) and John Locke and Co. of Kilbeggan (established in 1757); the latter is the oldest licensed distillery in the world. The company now produces three styles of single malt whiskey, several blends, and a small batch single grain - the Greeneore. Distillation continues to take place at the Cooley Distillery with the cooperage and ageing cellars in the John Locke’s Distillery in Kilbeggan. This bright gold whiskey offers a surprisingly sweet and mild nose. Look for hints of creamed corn, vanilla pudding and banana bread to appear first before a spicier component emerges with notes of cinnamon, allspice and ginger. The nose is surprisingly exotic for a single grain whiskey and quite enjoyable. At 18 years old, this Greenore whiskey has matured into a medium-bodied whiskey with enough viscosity to coat the mouth but it stays light enough that one could easily enjoy this as an aperitif. On the palate, there is an interesting interplay between the oak cask influence and the sweetness of the single grain whiskey. The grain whiskey adds both cereal notes that run toward the sweeter side as well as tropical fruit flavors of pineapple and banana. That is contrasted quite pleasantly with cinnamon, spice cake and nutmeg flavors imparted by the oak barrel aging. Overall, this is a very interesting and complex flavor profile for a single grain Irish whiskey. On the finish, Greenore 18 offers a relatively short and quick medley of cinnamon, pineapple upside down cake and orange marmalade before lifting off of the palate. While some may object to a short finish, Greenore 18 offers a lively whiskey that won't overwhelm ones palate, making it a perfect choice for whiskey enthusiasts to enjoy prior to a meal or simply on its own. Greenore 18 year old single grain Irish whiskey is an interesting and delicious expression of just what single grain whiskies can achieve. If you enjoy lighter and fruitier whiskies, make sure to keep an eye out for Greenore 18. You'll appreciate its delicate and exotic flavor profile and it may very well be the best single grain Irish whiskey on the market at this time.
