Wine information:
Single Cask bottling of Ben Nevis Vintage 1996 Single Highland Malt Whisky. This is an independent bottling by the Vintage Malt Whisky Co. (VMWC). The VMWC was founded by Brian Cook in 1992, Brian is a honours graduate in Food Science with twenty year’s experience in the malt whisky industry, latterly as Export Director for one of Scotland's principal distillers. The aim of the VMWC is to produce a range of malt whiskies from Scotland's finest distilleries and to make them available to independent wine and spirit importers throughout the world – this is done under The Cooper’s Choice label. This old malt is individually bottled and presented under the distinctive Coopers Choice label. Casks of malts at different ages are selected from some of Scotland's finest, but rarely bottled distilleries. They encompass all the varied tastes and flavours to be found from the Eastern coastline, to the Highland Valleys and all the way to the Western Isles. The Cooper’s Choice Range is dedicated to the men whose skills are an essential element in the maturation of malt whisky, this range brings to the connoisseur an opportunity to taste malts which are not frequently found in the general marketplace. Ben Nevis Distillery was established by ‘Long John’ McDonald in 1825. It is located at the foot of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak, 4,406 feet above sea level. In 1989 it was acquired by the Japanese Whisky firm Nikka Ltd. and production of malt whisky was revived in 1990. Ben Nevis Distillery website. Tasting Notes - "Colour: full gold. Nose: very interesting as we have just the same profile than with the two 1999s plus a layer of sweetish sherry that goes well with the juicy fruitiness. More blood oranges after a while and a distinct flintiness. Whiffs of hay, old wine barrel, very slightly musty. Maybe a little soap. Mouth: excellent attack! Something that reminds me of the official 10 – but I haven’t tried that one since ages (zoom, onto the to-do list!) Toffee, mint and chocolate, lavender sweets, bitter oranges, liquorice… And always that funny mustiness in the background. Shitake? Finish: long, clean, candied and then rather spicy. Peppered honey sauce. Comments: as atypical as Ben Nevis can be, that is to say typically Ben Nevis. I know what I mean." 80 Points,
