Wine information: Wakefield Wines are located in the heart of the Clare Valley and was founded by wine merchant Bill Taylor Senior in 1969 with the purchase of 178 hectares of vineyards near the Wakefield River in Auburn. Wakefield Wines are still known under their original name of Taylor's Wines in Australia. Bill Taylor carefully chose the site for its red brown loam over limestone soils ( this is known as "terra rossa") and cool climate of the Clare valley. The same year, 1969, the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines were planted. Today Wakefield Estate is one of the most highly esteemed cool climate producers in Australia. It is also unique in the fact that all of the grapes are sourced from 400 hectares of family-owned vineyards in the winery which makes it one of the largest single estate plantings in Australia. St Andrews is the flagship range of ultra premium wines from Wakefield Wines. In 1995 the Taylor family purchased the historical St Andrews property next door to the Wakefield estate, and the first Wakefield St Andrews wines were released in 1999.

Tasting Notes: Wakefield St. Andrews Chardonnay is straw with a green tinge to the hue and on the nose has fresh, lifted aromas of white peach and subtle citrus with cashew nut aromas adding interest to the fruit characters. The palate has a rich texture whilst still retaining a slightly minerally acid backbone, giving it an overall elegance. The mid palate has weight and creaminess from the extended lees maturation and battonage with flavours of white peach, cream and cashews. The finish has cleansing citrus flavours and length from the use of quality French oak.

Food & Wine match: Try it with classic roast chicken – French style or a rich and creamy seafood stew. Designed to drink superbly well upon release, it will also age gracefully with careful cellaring to 2013, possibly longer.
