Wine information:
Errazuriz Estate was founded in 1870 when
Don Maximiano Errazuriz planted his first vineyards at Panquehue in the
Aconcagua Valley - 100km North of the capital. Today, the tradition of quality lives on with Don Maximiano's descendant Eduardo Chadwick. Eduardo is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the wine business. Errazuriz's philosophy is best expressed by Don Maximiano who said, "From the best land, the best wine." The grapes for the
Sangiovese Single Vineyard are sourced from the Max II vineyard in at Errazuriz's Don Maximiano Estate in the Aconcagua Valley, a region that features an extended dry season with moderately warm summer days cooled by the gentle afternoon breezes that blow in from the Pacific Ocean. The Sangiovese vineyards of the Don Maximiano Estate were planted in 1994, primarily with the R24 clone (also called
Sangiovese Piccolo), which features small berries and intense berry fruit character. A smaller section is planted with the R10 clone and trellised in vertical shoot position. The Sangiovese vineyard is planted on a northwest-facing 5° slope with gravelly, sandy-clay soils that ensure excellent drainage. The vineyards are drip irrigated with high-density planting and are spur pruned. The grapes for this wine are harvested by hand and fruit was rigorously hand-sorted to guarantee optimum quality of the grapes. In order to allow the maximum extraction of ripe fruit flavour, the wine remained on its skins for an extended 10-30-day post-fermentation maceration, depending on the development of each individual lot. The wine was aged for 17 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels (51% new) to integrate beautiful oak character into the wine.
Tasting Notes:
Errazuriz Single Vineyard Sangiovese is violet-red in colour with remarkable intensity and a rich combination of aromas on the nose. Dried peaches and prunes mingle with a fresh fruit profile of cherries and figs. Subtle floral notes and truffle lead to the sweet spice, almond, and soft toast that come with oak aging. The palate is lush and full, with a beautifully lively attack and a backbone of firm tannins that lend vibrancy and volume on the palate and balance nicely with the bright acidity. Light toast, chocolate, and cinnamon flavours evolve on the palate and lead to a complex, mouth-filling and long-lived finish.
