The Frescobaldi name has a history stretching back many centuries into the history of art, culture, trade and finance of Italy in general and Tuscany in particular. From the second half of the last century, the Frescobaldi’s were keen players in the development of the Tuscan wine industry. Castelli di Pomino was designed by by Florentine architect Gherardo Silvani. The estate covers 1458 hectares lying along the wooded slopes of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, with 108 hectares in vineyards, at elevations ranging from 300 to 750 metres. It was recognised in 1716 by Cosimo III de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, for the excellence of its wines - Pomino has an environment unique for
Tuscany: a perfectly-balanced ecosystem of vineyards, fir forest, chestnut trees, and olive groves. The Castello di Pomino estate produces Pomino Bianco, Pomino Benefizio, Pomino Pinot Nero and Pomino Vendemmia Tardiva. Indeed, the Frescobaldis were the first in Tuscany to cultivate international varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Pomino Bianco is a made mostly from
Chardonnay with a little bit of Pinot Bianco. After pressing fermentation, of separate grape varieties, takes place 75% in stainless steel and 25% in French oak barriques. The wine is fermented for 21 days and undergoes a partial malolactic fermentation.
Tasting Notes:
Pomina Bianco appears a luminous, vivacious straw-yellow colour and Bianco offers an elegant bouquet of clean-edged aromas, with white-fleshed fruit the first to emerge, including apple, pear, peach, and banana, followed by fragrant hints of lily of the valley and hawthorn. An ultra-velvety texture, rich depth, and superb balance contribute to a remarkably elegant palate; its savoury fruit and vibrant acidity beautifully complement each other. A lengthy, delicious finish completes a wine that is both refreshing and refined.
