Notes - Established in 1852, Murrieta are one of the oldest and most respected bodegas of Rioja. Their wines are made in a "classic" Rioja style and receive long ageing in barrel before release. Their wines are concentrated and long-lived, both red and white, and some - like the Gran Reserva "Castillo Ygay" - have become legendary amongst Rioja-lovers. Marqués de Murrieta have not stood back and stagnated however: Their 300 hectare estate now has Cabernet Sauvignon planted for their Dalmau blend which represents Murrieta’s avante-garde expression of Riojan terroir. The 2002 Dalmau is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Graciano from the oldest single vineyards within the 300 Ha.Ygay estate. Aged 25 months in 225 L. new French oak casks. This modern interpetation of Rioja from Murrieta combines power and elegance. The strength of the wine is expressed in a smokiness, a ripe berry juiciness that grows deeper and lasts for minutes, especially after it’s been decanted and given some air. The elegance comes in the fragrant raspberry scent, the refreshing textural feel, the savoury richness. The tannins are potent but ripe and elegant. If you drink the wine now, you should open it in advance to soften those tannins and bring the fruit to the fore. This wine is intended to mature in bottle and will continue to develop over the next 10 years. All red meats and roasts, but particularly well suited to veal. Excellent with soft and delicate cheeses. We also recommend that this wine be decanted before serving.
