Domaine d'Alzipratu Cuvée Fiumeseccu Rouge AOC Corse Calvi

Wine information: Domaine d'Alzipratu is located 8 kms from Calvi in the north east of Corsica in the foothills of the Monte Grossu. The estate was created in the 1960s by Baron Henry de la Grange whilst he was owner of the Le Couvent d'Alzipratu. The estate is now run by 2nd generation winemaker Pierre Acquaviva. The 24 hectares of vineyards are on granitic soils and the plots are all south-facing overlooking the Bay of Calvi. There climate is mediterranean with some cooling, mountainous influences. Only traditional Corsican grapes are used as well as traditional Corse yeast strains! Cuvée Fiumeseccu Rouge is a blend composed of 60% Sciacarellu, 30% Niellucciu and 10% Grenache. Domaine d'Alzipratu is very respectful of the environment, the vineyards are hand weeded, no insecticides or pesticides are used and only organic compost is used as fertiliser. The vines are between 10 and 30 years old and are very low yielding - even more so in years where water is scarce. Grapes are picked by hand prior to destemming before undergoing temperature controlled fermentation with a period of maceration lasting between 8 and 12 days. Extraction is achieved through a mixture of remontages and pumping over. Maturation is on the lees in stainless steel, with bottling in the early spring. This is a lovely fruity wine with a lively and bright ruby colour. It has powerful red berry, herby aromas reminiscent of the scrubland around the vineyards, as well as a good mineral complexity. In the mouth it has a delicious juicy freshness and soft tannins. Try with charcuterie, grilled meats, pasta dishes, pan-fried liver with sage and cheeses.
