Notes - Vergelegen, meaning "situated far away" was purchased in October 1987 Anglo American Farms and extensively refurbished with carefully selected treasures of early Cape Furniture, objets and textiles representing 300 years of Vergelegen's existence. More importantly a complete vineyard re-planting project began in 1989. The award-winning Vergelegen winery is unlike any previously designed in South Africa. The octagonal design of the winery reflects that of the octagonal walled garden laid out by Willem Adriaan van der Stel in 1700. 100% Shiraz, gently pressed and the young wine was matured for 14 months in 30% new French oak and the balance in second and third fill French oak. Dark ruby with violets, spice, chocolate, black and red berry fruit on the nose. Elegant on the palate. The tannins are ripe and soft and the wine has a long clean aftertaste.
