Virgin Hills

Wine information: Virgin Hills is the gem of the Macedon Ranges and is acclaimed as one of Australia’s iconic vineyards. Founded in 1968 by restaurateur Tom Lazar, the vineyard was hailed as visionary for its plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Malbec and Merlot in this cool climate region. In 1998, Virgin Hills was briefly acquired by a publicly listed company. It is now back under family ownership following its purchase in October 2000 by Michael Hope, a pharmacist turned vigneron. Michael has been successfully producing premium wine in the Hunter Valley since 1997. See his other winery website - Hope Estate. Cabernet Sauvignon (85%), Shiraz (3.5%), Merlot (8%) and Malbec (3.5%) aged 100% in French oak, 50% in new barrels.

Tasting Notes: Virgin Hills 1999 is light to medium red purple colour. Strong berry, cassis, some mint and leaves, balanced with bottle aged savoury and roast coffee flavours finishing with good chalky tannins on the palate. Strong herbal and cassis distinctively cool climate from old vines on the nose. Could be cellared for upto 15 years.
