Wine information:
Armagnac is the oldest spirit in the world, used as a medecine in former times it has been distilled and appreciated since 1411. But Armagnac is also a region, part of the southwest of France whose symbol is a vine-leaf, and is divided into three "sous-appellations" : Bas-Armagnac, Ténarèze and Haut-Armagnac. Domaine du Hourtica, owned and run by Marthe Tarbe, is located on the Route de Lannemaignan in the commune of Labastide-D'Armagnac in Bas Armagnac. Bas Armagnac is lower lying than the other sub-regions (hence its name) and to the west the region’s 1er cru is an area of forested, rolling hills, on whose slopes lie the vineyards - it is often considered to be the best area for Armagnac. Once distilled the colourless spirit is aged in 420 litre oak barrels. It is here, in barrel, that the Armagnac leaches vanillins and tannins from the toasted oak which lend the spirit colour and flavour. The depth of colour and complexity of flavour increase all the time the spirit is aged in cask, the colour can can range from pale straw to rich amber. Part of the alcohol evaporates naturally during the long years in cask - this is known as "la part des anges" (the angel's share). A rich and fully rounded Armagnac from a small old fashioned farm in the Bas Armagnac. It has a good, rich golden / brown colour. The Nose is spicy with notes plenty of floral notes (violets), spices, cloves and oaky vanilla. These all lead on to the palate where are the oak and spirit is beautifully integrated. Soft, smooth, elegant and very lengthy. In this year - May 10th - Namco releases iconic Pac-Man arcade game.
