Notes - Barbeito is a family-owned company formed in 1946 by Mário Barbeito. Today Mario's grandson runs Vinhos Barbeito. Barbeito is a very traditinal cantiero style madeira and undergoes no de-acidification nor addition of caramel. This Madeira is 100% Tinta Negra Mole grown in a single vineyard in the lower part of Estreita de Camara de Lobos. The grapes were harvest on the 9th September 1997. After stopping the fermentation of the must the wine was moved into four old French oak casks of 720 litres capacity. Aging began in February 1998 in Barbeito's "a" warehouse. Aged under the traditional "canteiro" method the wine suffered good evaporation during the first 7 years in the cask. This fast, but very good, development of this wine meant that Barbeito decided to move the cask to the cooler "b" warehouse. During this last phase of aging the level of evaporation was very low which adds delicate notes to the nose and giving a good balance between sweetness and acidity. Very little Madeira is now made solely by the canteiro method, but they represent the pinnacle of the island’s vinous achievement.
