Notes - Giant Steps is owned and operated by a small team - Phil, Allison and Harry Sexton. Phil had originally established Devil's Lair vineyard in Margaret River in the 1980s. In 1997 Phil and his wife, Alison, took the "Giant Step" of selling up and moving to the Yarra Valley where they dreamed of creating a small, specialised cool climate vineyard together, as a family - thus Giant Steps Winery was created (named after the 1959 John Coltrane album of the same name on Atlantic records). On the nose there are hints of rose petals, roasted beetroot and sour plums. Caramel and brown butter. Spice/hint of cloves. Dark cherries. Tomato leaf. The palate is fleshy but tight, savoury and dusty wine. Tannins are very fine and carry right through the palate. Fruit bomb of cherries and spice. Good length and firm ‘laddered’ structure. A good wine for medium-term ageing.
