Wine information: W & J Graham’s was founded in Oporto, Portugal’s second city, in 1820 by the two brothers William and John Graham and for nearly two hundred years Graham's Ports have been made by just two families, the Grahams and the Symingtons - in 1970 the Grahams sold the company to the Symingtons who brought with them their own rich heritage in the Port trade. Graham’s Aged Tawny Ports are made from wines of the very highest quality which, following careful selection are blended and subsequently matured in seasoned casks for a number of years until their peak of maturity is attained. These are among the most demanding and challenging styles of Port to produce, requiring great skill and years of experience from the winemaker. It is essential to strike the correct balance between the delicacy and elegance which results from prolonged cask-ageing and the rich fruit quality which lends these old tawnies their structure, freshness and longevity. Graham’s aged tawnies show a characteristic ‘nutty’ quality and delicious mature honeyed fruit, exquisitely mellowed by ageing in seasoned oak casks. In warmer weather, try serving Graham’s Aged Tawnies lightly chilled – this adds a new dimension of pleasure to these superb wines. Graham’s Aged Tawny Ports have been awarded an impressive total of 7 gold medals at the International Wine Challenge (more than any other Port category), among them a ‘Tawny Port Trophy’ for the Graham’s 30 Years of Age. Ideal for a 40th birthday or fortieth wedding anniversary gift. Presented in an individual Graham's wooden box.

Tasting Notes: Golden amber with a pale green tinge at the rim which denotes great quality and class. Very complex on the nose with a powerful fragrance that belies its age. The palate is a gamut of flavours, ranging from delicate fruit and raisins to burnt toffee and chocolate. The persistent aftertaste is sheer pleasure. An excellent alternative to Vintage Port at less formal occasions. Will keep for some weeks after opening.

Food & drink match: Graham’s 40 Years Old Tawny will surely make any lunch or dinner a memorable one. It is a fabulous accompaniment to dark chocolate, but can also be enjoyed on its own - it is an experience in itself.

Reviews: “The judges simply raved about this incredible, subtle, long, intense and opulent wine. Almost amber-gold in colour, it shows a mature complexity of fruitcake, toffees and cream, and a balanced concentration.” Gold Medal, WINE Magazine, October 2000.

“Rich, toasty flavours with a full dry finish. An old wine with real poise.” Richard Mayson, Decanter Magazine, November 2000
