Notes - The Boutari company revived winemaking and viniculture in the area of Goumenissa in the late 1980s with financial support to local producers and the construction of a small state of the art winery. The Boutari winery is located in the mountains of Goumenissa, situated north-west of Thessaloniki. Boutari Goumenissa 2004 (13.5% Appellation of Origin of High Quality) is a blend of Xinomavro and Negoska, two indigenous red grapes, cultivated in Central Mecedonia. The Xinomavro gives good structure, rich taste and potential for ageing whilst the Negoska is smoother and softens the wine whilst adding good colour. Aged 1 year in oak barrels. The Goumenissa is a good, clear red / garnet colour with a slightly paler rim. There is plenty of red fruit on the nose, woody aromas (pencil box), slight balsamic notes, spices and hints of floral, violet and cherry notes. On the palate, the wine is soft and fruity, with more red fruits. It has supple tannins and a pleasant lingering aftertaste. Well stuctured and well balanced. Very good medium-bodied wine. Try with lighter meat dishes, pasta or soft cheeses. Was £8.99 per bottle.
