Wine information:
Quinta dos Roques is relatively small producer located in the small hamlet of Abrunhosa do Mata in the Dão. Owner Luis Lourenco and Rui Reguinga share wine-making duties. At the beginning of the 1980s Luis made a conscious decision to re-plant with the most suitable indigenous varieties, and to start bottling his own wines, even though he knew selling these might be difficult given that the estate was basically starting from scratch. Quinta dos Roques pioneered the idea of varietal bottling in Portugal with their 1996 wines, and were probably responsible for the Touriga Nacional gold rush which followed. Despite their fame, Roques remain a small producer, with many of their bottlings not exceeding 1000 cases. The Quinta Do Correio Tinto is a blend of Jaen and Touriga Nacional with smaller amounts of Alfrocheiro Preto, Tinta Roriz, fermented in stainless steel and then aged 12 months in French barriques. There are touches of herbs and caraway seeds in this dark, black fruity wine. The palate is quite Rhone-like, with a raspberry edge to the fruit and plenty of spice and brambly fruit.
