Notes - These wines, which are new to the UK market, are produced by Salena Estate Wines in South East Australia. The Gurra Creek range is an everyday range ideal for quaffing and comprises four varietals all at £4.99 per bottle. The 2004 vintage lent it self to Shiraz production, and in particular a specific style of this variety. A dry, consistently warm ripening period meant that the flavour profile of Shiraz developed in a way seldom seen. Rather than “tannic giants” that take years to develop, Shiraz in the region blossomed into ripe, approachable wines with mountains of generous fruit flavour, abundant ripe, soft tannin and excellent colour. Being picked at peak tannin and flavour ripeness, the Shiraz was picked at 14°Be. This is a rich, well-rounded red wine that is smooth, complex and very long in flavour. The nose offers a complex and generous bouquet of fruit and spice, plums, mulberry, licorice, ripe forest berries and a hint of gaminess – all of which is underscored by toasty, cigar box nuances derived from the extended oak maturation. The palate is the highlight of the wine, exhibiting the rich and vibrant varietal berry-fruit flavours. This wine is well suited to cheeses, Italian cuisine, red meats and even some spicy Asian dishes or can be sipped on its’ own. Eminently drinkable now, this Shiraz will develop further complexity with 2 or 3 years careful cellaring.
