Wine information:
Carmen was founded in 1850 by Christian Lanz, who named the winery in honour of his beloved wife Carmen. More than a century later, in 1987, the Claro Group acquired the brand to take it into a new direction. In 1992 a new winery was built and new vineyards were planted, to produce the best quality wines from Chile, and export them worldwide. The vineyards are ideally placed for the best combination of climate, soil and terroir to suit each varietal. All this, combined with a talented team of winemakers dedicated to quality and their craft, allows Carmen to maintain its position as a leading premium brand in the international market. Carmen’s main facility is located in the
Maipo Valley, 40 km. south of Santiago. This part of Chile is recognized as one of the best grape growing areas in the world, especially for Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards surrounding the winery are planted in the foothills of the Andes Mountains. The Alto Maipo Valley has a warm climate that allows the grapes to develop a unique matrix of fruit flavours. The temperature fluctuation between day and night is considerable, and is therefore the perfect condition to accumulate good levels of acidity and achieve an elegant balance in the fruit. The proximity of our vineyard to the river allows winds coming from the Andes to cool down day temperatures, and the altitude (700 meters above sea level) helps to bring night temperatures down rapidly.
Cabernet Sauvigon 50%, Carmenere 25% and Petit Syrah 25%.
Tasting Notes:
Carmen Winemaker's Reserve Red is an excellent Bordeaux-style blend. The nose is deep and smoky. Rich, clean and integrated on the palate, with layering and style. It is powerful and fruity. Earthy, ripe, with notes of tobacco, plums and cassis.
Reviews:
"Maturing, but still plenty solid, with borad currant, blackberry, coffee, cedar and shaved vanilla bean notes. Shows a cool vintage character with minty note, but has plenty of richness and depth on the fine-grained finish." 90 Points, James Molesworth
