Escudo Rojo is a blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Carmenère and Syrah creating the rest of the blend. Grapes are sourced from Chile’s Valle del Maipo and Valle del Rapel and harvested from mid February to late March. Each parcel of grapes is vinified separately at the Bodega Los Palmeras before the final blending. Fermentation occurs at a relatively high temperature in stainless steel with extended skin- contact to ensure maximum colour and flavour extraction. The final wines are then blended together and matured in French oak barrels for a period of 10 months before being bottled the following January. The first impression on the nose reflects the presence of the Carmenère grapes : the aromas then move through ripe fruit, cassis, raspberries and dried apricot all underpinned by spice and tobacco. The oak is already completely integrated in the taste. On the palate the wine is full of sweetness and silky tannins, round and fleshy. Delightful flavours of coffee, blackcurrants and a hint of vanilla are present giving the wine a long and pleasant finish. It is recommended that this wine is opened an hour before serving.
