Wine information:
In 1979 Sean Thackrey turned his hand from selling antique books to winemaking. He is definitely not your usual winemaker. Living on the edge of the world down in Marin county he makes these handcrafted wines in his outdoor winery beneath the eucalyptus trees. Pleiades is very much his “chef’ s special”. It doesn’t bear a vintage (Roman numerals depict the identity of the particular version) nor does he put the same grape varieties in it every year. The XIX, the 19h edition, bottled in June 2010 is includes Sangiovese, Viognier, Mourvedre Syrah and Petit Syrah to name but a few. A purplish-ruby coloured wine showing a nose dominated by cloves and spice. The fruit driven palate is showing strawberry and cherry fruit character that gives way to an enjoyably long complex spicy finish. To quote Sean’s back label: “The object of Pleiades Old Vines is to be delicious, delight the jaded, irritate the Wine Police, and go well with anything red wine goes well with. Fragrant and voluptuous when first released, it will become far more subtle and complex with a year or two of bottle age, although such restraint might be too much to ask of most of us." In the words of Robert Parker: “One of California's most iconic and mystical winemakers, Sean Thackrey has logged in 20 or more vintages of consistently stunning wines that perhaps say it all with the simple quote on his label: -Sean A. Thackrey, Vintner, Bolinas, California.”
