Wine information:
Niepoort Redoma is like the
Douro - "extreme and with a rigorous character” - and is produced from very old, high altitude vineyards in the
Pinhão valley. These vineyards, some of which are over 60 years old, are planted with upto 30 different grape varieties - the main vines are Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca. 2002 was quite a difficult year as there was a lot of rain during the harvest. There was a very careful selection of grapes in the winery to avoid rotten, overripe or unripe berries. After de-stemming fermentation was carried out in old stone lagares with treading by foot ans some in stainless steel lagares with hydraulic systems. The average maceration time was 10 days. The wine was aged for 16 months in french oak casks (228l).
Redoma Tinto is Dirk Niepoort’s original Douro wine, first released in 1991.
Tasting Notes:
Niepoort Redoma shows a very intense dark fruit nose. On the palate the wine is young and powerful, with great richness and bold tannins, however it shows more freshness than pure fruit. The finish is classic, perhaps a touch austere but very long. It is a wine with great aging potential.
