Wine information:
Domaine Jean-Paul and Benoit Droin's extensive premier and grand cru holdings span the entire range of the Chablis stylistic repertory. From mineral La Montee de Tonnerre, Vaudesir and Les Clos to fruitier and softer-textured Vaillons, La Fourchaume and Valmur, with Montmains somewhere in between adding citrus and floral notes, site specific nuances of flavour (and Chablis is all about nuances) are accurately translated into bottle. Outstanding cellarwork here from the father and son team concentrates on using oak sensitively to enhance rather than obscure appellation character: fermentation is carried out variably in oak or stainless steel, and the length and type of barrel ageing programme are adjusted to each wine. Chablis Grand Cru Le Clos is a very subtle wine, which shares many similarities with the Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru - it is very mineral with a unique finesse, with developing hints of vanilla. In general it is dryer and more structured than the other Grand Crus will drink from anywhere between 4 to 10 years from vintage. For many Le Clos is the greatest of the Chablis Grand Crus.
"Minerally but subdued. Lime zest, white flowers. Tangy, lively finish, good acidity and fruit depth. Grapefruity, zesty style." www.decanter.com
"(50% wood, approximately one-third of which was new). Moderate but not intrusive wood mixes with high-toned and elegant white flower, mineral and saline aromas that give way to very rich, full and generous flavors that are also impressively concentrated and textured as they are blessed with ample dry extract and superb finishing intensity on the explosive citrus-infused finish. This is built on its minerality and while it’s not as tight as usual, this will still be good for a decade’s worth of aging potential. Worth a look." 2011+ - 91-94 points, Allen Meadows' Burghound
