Wine information:
Celler de Joan Sangenís, one of the oldest grape-growing families in the Priorat, historically sold their grapes to the local cooperative until forming a new company in 1995 to bottle wine under their own name. Based in Porrera, they own 80 hectares of south-facing vineyards with an average age of 50 years and several small parcels of 100+ year old vines of Garnacha and Carignan. The oldest vineyards are situated on steep slopes known as 'costers' and the younger vines are found on the northwest facing terraces. Joan Sangenís, the enormously talented, young owner/oenologist did not study winemaking at University or Oenological school, rather experience and research are his personal University. The heart and the continuous testing updates are what are important to him. He says that he spends 10 months in the vineyards and 2 months in the cellar, explaining that great wines come from great grapes and not great hands. Named after La Planots, Sangenis’s oldest vineyard, this exceptional wine is produced from 100 year old Garnacha (60%) and Cariñena (40%) vines and aged 14 months in new French Allier. Tiny yields of 200/300 gr per vine only allow a total production of 600 bottles from 2 hectares of land. Vibrant dark crimson colour with hints of purple, an intriguing, toasted and mature fruit cake nose with mineral notes, mountain herbs, liquorice and chocolate. Immensely full and powerful on the palate, great concentration of mature fruit from very low yields. A richness of flavours, balsamic, eucalyptus, envelopes the senses, reminiscent of the aromatic herbs and llicorella (slate) soil typical of the area. Grand structure and velvety tannins with an enduring and memorable finish. A sensational Priorat wine that may be laid down for 5 or more years.
