Wine information: Château Pichon Baron was once part of a larger estate, owned by Pierre de Rauzan, along with Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande In 1850 the estate was divided into the two current Pichon estates. In 1987 the estate was purchased by French insurance company AXA, who immediately appointed Jean-Michel Cazes of Château Lynch-Bages as administrator. Champagne Louis Roederer took over the controlling share of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in November 2006. The 87 hectares (215 acres) of this vineyard border the property of Château Latour and stretch south of Pauillac towards the commune of St Julien, whence it gets its extraordinary charm. The exceptional character of the wines produced here are distinguished by their elegance and finesse. This is due to a harmonious balance of different grape varietals: 35% Merlot (a very high percentage for this appellation) to give roundness and suppleness; 45% Cabernet Sauvignon to provide longevity; 12% Cabernet Franc for finesse and 8% Petit Verdot to ensure a certain freshness and aromatic complexity.

Reviews: "Pichon Longueville Baron's 1996 has turned out to be even better than I thought from cask. The high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend (about 80%) resulted in a wine that has put on weight in the bottle. An opaque purple color is accompanied by beautiful aromas of tobacco, new saddle leather, roasted coffee, and cassis. It is dense, medium to full-bodied, and backward, with moderately high tannin, but plenty of sweet fruit, glycerin, and extract to balance out the wine's structure. This well-endowed, classic Pauillac should be at its finest between 2006-2022." 91 Points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 122.

"Gorgeous aromas of crushed blackberries, currant and citrus fruit. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a fruity, herbal aftertaste. A little hollow on the midpalate. Ready to go.--'95/'96 Bordeaux retrospective. Drink now. 25,000 cases made." 90 Points, James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2007
