Wine information:
Established in 1907, the co-operative was founded with a basic aim of ensuring a reasonsable income, during troubled times, for the Appiano winegrowers. From the start, quality wine production was foremost in the grower's minds, beginning with the then futuristic winery that was built in the heart of Appiano in an Art Nouveau style. The philosophy of the company is simple: Quality, from vineyard to bottle. The San Michele Appiano winery is considered to be one of the best wineries in South Tyrol and Italy, with its 355 members, 330 hectares of vineyard and 2.5 million bottles sold every year. The expertise of Master Winemakers, Hans Terzer, led the Gambero Rosso to rank him among the 'Top 10 Master Winemakers in the World' in 2000. The same year that the winery itself was named 'Winery of the Year' by the prestigious competition (the first time a co-operative had been awarded this accolade). Under his stewardship the winery has won no less than 20 Tre Bicchieri at the Gambero Rosso over the years. !00% Pinot Nero hand harvested mid-September from vineyards located in Oltre-Adige. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures for 15 days. 70% of the wine is then stored in large oak casks, whilst the other 30% is aged in small barriques. Characterised by strength and elegance, this wine is second to none on the international scene. A very special red in every respect – colour, bouquet and taste. Complex and multi-facetted, it features intensive fruity aromas with pleasant vanilla overtones. Bright ruby red colour, round and velvety on the palate with intense fruity aromas of forest fruits and vanilla due to its ageing in small oak casks.
