Wine information:
The Royal Tokaji Wine Company pioneered the renaissance of Tokaji after the fall of Communism in 1989. A group of foreign investors, including Hugh Johnson and Peter Vinding-Diers, formed the company in cooperation with 63 growers in Mád, the Hungarian village which friends jested was named in anticipation of their joint venture. Agreeing to produce only Aszú wines with four puttonyos or more, and using the classification of 1700 as their guide to the finest terroirs, the association of growers and investors produced their first vintage in 1990. These ground-breaking wines signalled the return of the unique Tokaji style. Rich, sweet, concentrated ripe fruit. Clean, modern style, but already showing an impressive complexity. Notes of apricots honey and oranges can be found. The Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos Blue Label is a blend of carefully selected grapes from several of Royal Tokaji’s vineyards, using the 1st growth Nyulaszo vineyard as the benchmark. This wine is usually called Red Label in the USA and Blue Label in the rest of the world. As in all aszu wines, the three grape varieties are Furmint, Harslevelu and Muscat de Lunel. The characteristics are a vivid gold colour with honeyed apricot and orange peel flavours which are uplifted with dramatic acidity. Enjoy with foie gras and asian fusions, with dry and blue cheeses or with fruit and chocolate desserts.
