Wine information:
The Sonnalta, meaning generous or liberal in Gaelic, is the first in a series of special releases from the Glenmorangie Private Collections range. Sonnalta has been matured in ex-bourbon casks for 10 years and then transferred to Pedro Ximenez (PX) sherry casks for a further year. Pedro Ximenez is a very sweet grape variety that originated on the Canary Islands and was bought over to Jerez, in Spain, by a man called Pedro Ximenez in the 16th century. He went on to produce a very sweet, dark and sticky style of sherry that is still made today. These PX casks impart a lovely rich golden brown colour to the whisky, as well as adding great complexity and exciting new flavours to the whisky. On the nose there are notes of dark chocolate, sun-dried raisins. treacle and demeera sugar. Further aromas of orange peel, hot chocolate, espresso coffee, vanilla, honey and toasted almonds all emerge. Addition of water further enhances these aromas but also releases notes of red cherry, fruitcake, prunes and hints of cocao, toast and sweet leather. Bottling at 46% and non-chill filtering means that a full body and texture is preserved giving a syrupy, chewy, toasty mouthfeel. The palate is sweet and fruity with the flavour of tangy cake mix and orange peel. This progresses on the palate into honeyed and syrup pudding flavours. At the back of the palate flavours of prune, raisins, treacle and toasted almonds appear. The finish is long and rich to the end with more treacle / toffee notes, sun-dried raisins, cinnamon spice and syrupy prune notes. Definitely an after dinner whisky, try in place of an Armagnac or Cognac.
