Wine information: Gevrey Chamberti is the most northern of the great communes of the Côte de Nuits. There are 26 Premiers Crus and 8 Grands Crus. One half of Premiers crus is around Grands Crus (near Morey), the other is at the north near la Combe de Lavaux, with a clayey and chalky soil. The Clos Saint Jacques vineyard is located at the beginning of the valley called Combe de Lavaux. It is very nicely South-East oriented. There are only five owners of this prestigious Clos. The wine is fermented in vats during 3 to 4 weeks and then aged in oak barrels for 18 to 20 months before bottling. It was only a quirk of fate when the Burgundy appellations were decided in the 1930s the "Clos Saint Jacques" was ranked as premier cru not grand cru!

Tasting Notes: Louis Jadot Gevrey Chambertin Clos Saint Jacques is a full-bodied and complex wine. It shows a broad palate of aromas, both powerful and elegant, with an impressive length in the mouth. Approaching Grand Cru in quality this is generous and full-bodied with sumptuous fruit, great complexity, concentration and balance.

Food & Wine match: It will perfectly match game, meat in sauce, mushrooms and strong cheese.

Reviews: "Perfume, violets, strawberry, lots of core fruit, powerful and refined." (RH) 17 Points, Jancis Robinson

"Saturated medium red. Black cherry, violet and some caramel oak high tones on the nose. Sweet, dense and floral, with a rather strong oakiness in spite of the fact that this is aging in just 30% new barrels. Best today on the very broad, sweet back end, which features suave tannins and excellent length. From a second barrel: More espresso but less caramel on the nose. Juicy and imploded in the mouth, with lovely perfume to the tangy cherry and raspberry flavors. A dense, saline wine with terrific energy and length. I'd like to taste this side by side with the 2008 in a few years. My score is for the second sample." 92-94 points, Stephen Tanzer, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

"Here the ripe nose is not only the most complex among these Gevrey 1ers but also the most elegant as there is excellent breadth to the red berry liqueur and stone aromas. The delicious and mineral-inflected medium weight flavors display ample verve and good mid-palate density that mostly buffers the firm but well-integrated tannic spine, all wrapped in a gorgeously persistent finish. This should be a classic CSJ with 12 to 15 years of bottle age though have the advantage of being accessible after 6 to 8." 92 - 95 Points, Allen Meadows, Burghound.com
