Wine information:
This rum is part of the Mezan range of single cask bottlings. These are all single cask (apart from the Jamaica XO, which is an aged blend) and single vintage bottlings. The idea behind the range is to bring to the consumer the story of the diversity of rum amongst the Caribbean Islands – styles and methods of production, and therefore the rums vary widely. The Mezan rums are also as natural as possible – after the casks have been selected they are not chill-filtered, nor is there any colour, sugar or other flavourings added. Originally there were more than 50 rums in Trinidad – by 1950 that number had reduced to 8 and today there is only one - Angostura. Caroni was established in 1918 on the site of the old Caroni Sugar factory and operated until 1993. It has a fascinating distilling history: they operated a cast iron still and briefly a wooden coffey still until introducing a copper still in 1945, followed by a single column in 1957 and a four column Gerb Herman still in 1980. The cast iron and wooden stills were then replaced by new twin column stills made by Messrs. Blair, Campbell & McLean, Ltd., of Glasgow and finally further new pot stills were added in 1984. This rum was column distilled.
Rich nose with notes of liquorice and very ripe fruit. The palate shows candied peel, burnt rubber and sweet spice. On the finish it is quite a rich rum and very long.
