Wine information:
The appellation of Montagny is located in the Côte Chalonnaise of Burgundy and is a white-only appellation. Most of the wine made at the small, walled, monopole vineyard of Le Clos Salomon is made as Givry 1er Cru. However, since, 2004, the engaging winemaking duo, Ludovic du Gardin and Fabrice Perrotto, have also been making tiny quantities of Montagny (and a little white Givry). Vine age is high; yields often painfully low. The sometimes fierce materials, reinforced by strong levels of natural grape acidity, may impose lengthy cellarage in unyielding vintages. But it is worth waiting for one of Burgundy`s most original, unspoilt Pinot Noirs, brimming with raw fruit energy. Within the vineyard walls – records of Le Clos Salomon date back to 1375; it has been in Ludovic`s family since 1631 – lie seven hectares, facing east and south, of variable, often steep, slope. Harvesting splits out vineyard blocks according to altitude, ripeness and vine age. Blending occurs at the end of 12 months élevage, using 25-30% new oak. The wine then rests in tank for four months before bottling, generally without fining and filtering. Montagny Le Clou is has plenty of mineral character on the nose with aromas of peach, floral, blossom notes and some nutty characteristics, there are also certain herbaceous aromas. The oak is well integrated. The palate is very well balanced and there is plenty of minerality backed up with grapefruit flavours. It has good mouthfeel and good length. Think of a cross between a Montagny and a Puligny Montrachet!
