Wine information: Le Petit Mouton is the second wine of Château Mouton Rothschild has been produced since 1993, although the name "Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild" was first used in 1994 (Petit Mouton is the name of Baroness Philipine's residence on the Rothschild estate). It is made from a selection of the youngest vines and harvested, vinified and bottled in the same way - the grapes are collected in small baskets; the wine is fermented in the famous Mouton oak vats and aged in barrels using traditional methods. Everything is done to ensure that the wine expresses the elegance and depth of a great Pauillac. Only very small quantities are ever produced. The label for the second wine is another design by Jean Carlu, the man who was also behind the first ever Mouton label, for the 1924 vintage.

Reviews: "The second wine, the 2009 Le Petit Mouton, is the finest second wine they have ever made. Aromas of black currants, flowers, mocha, and earth jump from the glass of this fleshy, heady, full-bodied wine. The final blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, and the alcohol level is slightly higher than the Mouton’s. It should drink well for 15+ years. (Tasted once.)" 90 - 92 Points, Robert Parker

"63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc – one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc. Very solid and rather arresting on the nose. Then just a little rustic on the palate. Chewy tannins – not the ultra- suppleness of, say, Carruades and Les Forts. More of an obvious second wine? Rather drying tannins on the finish." 16 Points, Jancis Robinson

"Impressive aromas of mint, mineral and black fruits follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and persistent finish. Dense and well-structured. 63 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 22 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Franc" 90 - 93 Points, Wine Spectator
