Wine information:
The Blandy family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and in the economic development of this remote Atlantic Island. The family continues today to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811. Modelled after Colheita Ports, the Harvest (or Colheita) is a single vintage Madeira that has been aged in cask for at least seven years. Blandy's Bual Colheita underwent fermentation off the skins with natural yeast at temperatures between 18°C - 21°C in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. After approximately 3 days, fortification with grape brandy takes place, arresting fermentation at the desired degree of sweetness. Blandy’s Colheita Bual 1991 was aged in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the wine is gently heated by warm air in the lofts of the company’s south-facing lodge in Funchal. Over the years the casks are transferred from the top floor to the middle floor and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. The wine is regularly racked during the ageing process and is finally bottled when the desired balance of maturity is reached. Blandy's Colheita is fined and does not require decanting. It has been bottled when ready for drinking and will keep for several months after opening.
Tasting Notes:
Topaz colour with amber reflections. Characteristic bouquet of Madeira with dried fruits, vanilla and oak. Medium sweet and full bodied, with a fresh aftertaste of vanilla and toffee.
Food & drink match:
It is a superb accompaniment to dessert dishes, especially fruit, cakes, rich chocolate puddings and cheeses.
Reviews:
"....smooth as, with rich, ripe, figgy dried fruit and cafe crème with spice; long, beautifully balanced and utterly engaging." Sarah Ahmed, The Wine Detective.
