Wine information:
Chateau de Loupiac was sold, in 1920, to the Ducau family who merged it with Domaine de Gaudiet and so Chateau Loupiac-Gaudiet was created. The estate is currently owned by Marc Ducau and run by his nephew Daniel Sanfourche.
Loupiac is one of the lesser appellations of
Bordeaux that specialises in the production of sweet white wines. The vineyards are laid out around the Chateau and have a southern exposition overlooking the Garonne (it is opposite Sauternes). In autumn, the misty mornings and sunny afternoons are perfect for the development of
Botrytis cinerea, or ‘noble rot’. The grapes are picked in the traditional way, entirely by hand, in successive passes through the vines from early October until mid-November. The winemaking process combines four generations of experience with modern technology and produces a lovely golden wine, smooth and full of fruit, that is aged for two years before bottling. A great
dessert wine.
Tasting Notes:
Chateau Loupiac-Gaudiet is a lusciously sweet, rich and full wine. It has aromas of ripe peaches and blossom with just a hint of marmalade. It tastes of super ripe oranges, nectarines and clementines with suggestions of sweet spice.
Food & Wine match:
The relatively unknown Loupiac makes a great value alternative to Sauternes and is an excellent match with chicken dishes, foie gras, fruit based desserts or simply as an aperitif.
