Notes - Nino Negri, a winemaker of some repute, founded the company in 1897. It was his son Carluccio who put the name on the map. Valtellina has four ‘crus’ (Sassella, Inferno, Grumello and Fracia), and Negri owns vines in all of them. The grape Chiavennasca is a strain of Nebbiolo, and because of the steep vineyards and southerly exposures, the wines are deep and complex, yet always enticingly elegant, even for a region so high up in the Alps. Sfursat is translated as 'achieved with effort'. The wine is only produced from the best vintages and the grapes are dried on straw mats to increase the sugar content. After the fermentation there is an addition of semi dried grapes to bring the alcoholic volume to the required 14.5%. The wine needs a high alcoholic degree so that it can withstand long ageing in oak casks. Deep ruby red in colour tending to brown around the edges. Displays a rich, fruity bouquet with overtones of nutmeg. The palate is smooth, austere, full and dry with a touch of sweetness in the nutty, caramel finish.
