Wine information:
The Campbell family winemaking heritage began in 1870 when Scotsman John Campbell made his first wine from the
Bobbie Burns vineyard. The fifth generation of the Campbell family, brothers Colin and Malcolm, have maintained the commitment to quality and growth and today there are about 64 hectares under vine. Campbells is also one of the inaugural members
Australian First Families of Wine (AFFW). Rutherglen, quite rightly, is famous for its Muscats. These are a unique combination of the region’s climate, the grape variety, soils, the skills handed down through the generations and the wonderful old stocks reserved by past generations. For Campbells Classic
Rutherglen Muscat the grapes are harvested at the very end of the growing season and achieve a very high sugar level. Only selected parcels of premium fruit are used to produce wines for this solera. The Muscat is fortified and enters into a "solera" system similar to those used in Sherry production. The wine that provides the basis of this solera dates back to the 1950’s. Only small amounts are withdrawn from this solera, ensuring the highest quality and consistency of style.
Tasting Notes:
Campbells Classic Rutherglen Muscat is a deep amber colour with tawny hues. The nose has rich fresh raisin fruit aromas with great depth and showing some rancio characters. The palate has great power and intense fruit with balance and elegance. There is evidence of mellow oak with the luscious lingering finish.
Food & Wine match:
Excellent with vintage cheddar or blue vein cheeses, dried fruit and fresh nuts or as a memorable end to a meal with freshly brewed coffee.
