Wine information: Turkey Flat was founded in 1847 by Silesian refugee Johann Frederick August Fiedler who planted Shiraz vines in the rich alluvial soils adjacent to the Bethany Creek. Turkey Flat is the local name for the vineyard property and is believed to be so named by the original settlers in the late1840’s after the large flocks of native bush turkeys (Australian Bustard) in the area. The Turkey Flat vineyards and winery are now situated on the historic Section One property in the centre of the Barossa. The Schulz family became owners of the Turkey Flat property in around 1865 and while they continued to tend the ancient vineyard, they also developed a thriving butchers business. Turkey Flat wines are made from five individual vineyard estates, all owned by Peter and Christie Schulz. The Butchers Block is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage.

Tasting Notes: Turkey Flat Butcher's Block Red is a blend of 58% Shiraz, 21% Grenache and 21% Mourvédre. Each varietal component of this wine was vinified separately in open fermenters and subsequently aged in both hogsheads and larger format French oak for approximately 18 months. The result is an intense warm, earthy full-bodied red with seamless oak integration. The nose is floral with dark plum, violets and hints of clove, cherry and juniper berry. The palate shows juicy sweet lifted fruits with a hint gaminess and creamy vanillin oak character. An elegant and restrained wine with a velvety finish.

Food & Wine match: Try with Osso Bucco served with creamy mash and gremolata, Cassoulet, Game pie with mushy peas, Roast pheasant with braised witlof & pancetta.

Reviews: "A ripe, raspberry and fruitcake spice bouquet, also showing a slight briny compexity; stricter on the palate, with a generous core of sweet red fruit on the mid-palate; finishes dry and firm." 91 Points, James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion 2010.
