Notes - Amarula Cream is a South African cream liqueur made from the fruit of the African Marula Tree, cream and suger. Think South African Bailey's. The Marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) is also known locally as the Elephant or Marriage tree. Marula trees cannot be cultivated and the fruit has to be picked at the height of the South African summer. Elephants are known to eat rotten andfermenting Marula fruit and get a bit tipsy! Amarula can be enjoyed over ice, in coffee and in various cocktails. Visit the Amarula Website. Because of the Marula tree's association with elephants, the distiller. Distell, has made them its symbol and supports elephant conservation efforts. Amarula has made available more than R3-million over a five year period for the Amarula Elephant Research Programme, based in the School of Biological and Conservation Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban.
