Vintage (or Frasquiera) Madeira must be aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years, in practise they are aged for much longer, before being bottled under Madeira Wine Institute supervision. The wine must then be aged in bottle for a further two years before being released for sale. Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter. It makes an ideal wedding or anniversary present. Cossart Gordon Frasqueira-Vintage Madeiras continually fetch the very highest prices at international fine wine auctions. They are renowned for their superb quality and style. The 1971 Cossart Gordon is made form 100% Sercial grapes. "Pale amber color with just the slightest green touch. Elegant, most refreshing Sercial on the nose with starting complexity of lime peel, salt almonds, smoke and a youthful scent of white peaches. If I didn't know what's in the glass I would never have guesses a 1971! After two days opened it also gives away a discrete floral scent and a touch of eucalyptus.
On the palate it's continuing on the refreshing path with lime and orange's, nicely backed up by toffee, nutmeg, smoke, eucalyptus and that, for many not used to Sercial, sky-high acidity. Dry in its style and a mineral feel to the elegant and long finish. For its age a really impressive Sercial" 94 Points, Niklas Jörgensen, Mad about Madeira, September 2010.
