Notes - Bernheim Original Straight Wheat Whiskey is the first truly new variety of American straight whiskey introduced since prohibition. Bernheim uses soft winter wheat for a soft, sweet flavor and medium finish. The whiskey is produced at the namesake Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky as a “small batch” and aged in Rickhouse Y at Heaven Hill’s Bardstown, Nelson County facilities. The current bottling features a gold medallion label on a clear glass bottle with wheat etchings and a wax closure. Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is bottled at 90 proof (45% alc/vol). Interesting mash bill of 51% soft winter wheat, 39% corn and 10% barley malt, gives a gentle personality with a touch of sweetness and vanilla. The taste picks up with some spice, fruit and oak coming through. It gathers pace with the oak to the fore and then finishes with a touch of honey and cereal sweetness. "Gentle in personality and predominantly sweet, with notes of honeyed vanilla, caramel, maple syrup, coconut cream pie, and a hint of red licorice. Underlying bright fruit, suggestions of green tea, and a dusting of cinnamon keep the whiskey lively and upbeat. A soft, toasted oak finish tames the sweetness and provides balance. The whiskey is more approachable and easier to drink than a typical bourbon containing rye…It is an interesting change of pace from the standard bourbon fare, and it is a unique exploration of American whiskey without sacrificing authenticity.” John Hansell, Malt Advocate Magazine.
