Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon

Wine information: Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon is arguably Australia’s finest Semillon. Tyrrell’s Vat 1 was first produced in 1963 from Semillon grapes grown on the sandy dry creek bed of the Short Flat Vineyard across the road from Tyrrell’s historic Pokolbin winery. Regarded as one of the world’s greatest white wines, Vat 1 is quite unique and a true expression of Hunter terrior. According to Jancis Robinson, “Semillon is Australia’s unique gift to the world. Grapes were hand picked then lightly crushed and the must was fined prior to a relatively cool fermentation in stainless steel. After a short period on gross lees the wine was racked and left to mature in stainless steel for a further five months before bottling. The 2002 vintage has been awarded 13 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze medals. Since its inception in 1962, the Vat 1 Semillon has been awarded 115 trophies, 365 gold, 194 silver and 255 bronze medals.

Tasting Notes: Tyrrell's Vat 1 Semillon shows a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus fruit flavours. This wine is beginning to display toasty bottle aged complexity. Whilst drinking well now, it will continue to develop delicious bottle age characters.
