Wine information:
For 200 years, Blandy’s Madeira has been synonymous with quality Madeira wine. The Blandys are unique in being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine throughout its long history and members of the family continue to live on Madeira, maintaining a tradition that goes back to 1811. Made from 100% Malmsey sourced from various quality vineyards including Sao Jorge at altitudes between 150-200m. After fermentation, and the subsequent fortification, Blandy’s 10 Year Old Malmsey is aged for 10 years in seasoned American oak casks in the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, whereby the casks of this wine are gradually transferred from the top floors of the lodge, where it is naturally warmer, to the middle floors and eventually to the ground floor where it is cooler. During this totally natural ageing, the wine underwent regular racking before finally being bottled. Blandy's 10 year old Malmsey is fined and does not require decanting. It is a superb accompaniment to dessert dishes, especially fruit, cakes, rich chocolate puddings and cheeses. It has been bottled when ready for drinking and will keep for several months after opening. It is a clear, dark golden brown with green tinges at the rim. Complex and intense nose revealing a bouquet of wood, dried fruits, toffee and spices. Sweet, fresh and smooth with length, full bodied with lingering, smoky characteristics and extremely well balanced acidity. Serve lightly chilled in Summer. "Quite dark... Tangy acidity and quite sweet, with chocolate and raisin notes. Very long finish and lots of grip. Stands on its own after dinner". Lyn Farmer - The Wine News, March 2001.
