Wine information: Beaujolais Louis Jadot bought Château des Jacques in 1996. It is situated in Moulin à Vent, between Fleurie and Chenas, and has a 27 ha vineyards of 'Moulin à Vent'. The 5 'Clos' cover an average of 19.5 hectares. The Moulin à Vent wine is now referred to as the "King of Beaujolais", and is considered to be the most Burgundian Cru of Beaujolais. Geological origin and soil composition are quite different from the Côte d'Or. This is why the Beaujolais red wines are only made of Gamay grapes. The soil from the "Clos du Grand Carquelin" is quite light, made up of sand and a little bit of clay, lying on a bedrock high in manganese. This helps give the wine its deep colour. The vineryard covers 5 hectares. 100% Gamay, the wine is vinified in closed vats with pumping over, and then aged in oak barrels for 12 months. One part of the grapes are de-stemmed.

Tasting Notes: Moulin A Vent Clos du Grand Carquelin has an exquisite colour; deep cherry red. The nose has powerful aromas, of lush red fruit and spices, both elegant and dense. The palate is full and rich, tannins are well-formed despite their youth, at once harmonious, delicate and impressive. A wine of the highest standard, with a full, fleshy fruit character.

Reviews: "Very dark crimson. Fragrant and rather more evolved aromatically than the straight Ch des Jacques. Very polished and urbane. Meaty, savoury, with very fine tannin management. Some sweet raspberry fruit on the front palate with well-hidden tannins." 17 Points, Jancis Robinson

"Chateau des Jacques’s 2009 Moulin-a-Vent Clos du Grand Carquelin originates in manganese- and iron-rich sandy soil of reputedly unusual diversity and complexity for its appellation. Its confectionary cast of dark berries; vanilla and cinnamon overlay; and richness of texture make for a striking contrast with the especially bright, high-energy cast that prevailed in the renditions of 2007 and 2008. Seamlessly long, it evinces saline and pungent suggestions of things mineral sufficient to stimulate genuine intrigue, not to mention salivation. This should be worth following for half a dozen or more years." 91 - 92 Points, David Schildknecht, Issue #190, Wine Advocate
